Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about WillWriter and creating your UK Will.

Is WillWriter a substitute for a solicitor?

No. WillWriter helps you create a legally structured Will, but it does not provide legal advice. The software guides you through the process and validates your inputs, but users with complex estates, business interests, or overseas assets should consult a qualified solicitor.

Which jurisdictions does WillWriter cover?

WillWriter covers England, Wales, and Scotland. The software automatically detects Scottish postcodes and applies the appropriate legal framework, including differences in witnessing requirements and estate administration.

Does WillWriter store my data in the cloud?

No. WillWriter is a desktop application. All your data stays on your local computer. No information is sent to any server, and no account is required. The application works entirely offline after download.

How does the 10-stage wizard work?

The wizard guides you through: (1) personal details, (2) family structure, (3) assets, (4) beneficiaries, (5) executors, (6) guardians, (7) specific gifts, (8) residuary estate, (9) tax planning, and (10) final review. Each stage includes validation and contextual guidance.

What format is the final Will in?

WillWriter generates a professional PDF document ready for physical signing and witnessing. The PDF includes all necessary clauses, schedules, and signing instructions. You print it, sign it in the presence of two witnesses, and store it safely.

Does WillWriter handle inheritance tax planning?

WillWriter warns you about inheritance tax thresholds and provides guidance on tax-efficient structuring. It shows the current nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band. However, it does not provide tax advice. For complex tax planning, consult a qualified tax adviser or solicitor.

What are the 12 validation rules?

The 12 validation rules check for: beneficiary-witness conflicts, executor eligibility, guardian appointment for minors, residuary estate defaults, conflicting designations, substitutional beneficiaries, executor age/capacity, Scotland-specific requirements, charity registration, trust structure, tax threshold alerts, and signing instruction completeness.

What are the 14 conditional clauses?

WillWriter builds 14 conditional clauses: revocation of prior wills, declaration of intent, appointment of executors, substitutional executors, guardian appointment, trust provisions for minors, specific legacies, residuary estate distribution, substitutional beneficiaries, charitable gifts, tax planning provisions, burial wishes, attestation, and Scotland-specific clauses where applicable.

How does Scotland detection work?

Enter your postcode and WillWriter automatically determines if you are in Scotland, applying the correct legal framework including differences in witnessing requirements, confirmation procedures, and estate administration under Scottish law.

Is my Will legally valid after using WillWriter?

WillWriter produces a legally structured document. For it to be legally valid, you must print the PDF, sign it in the presence of two witnesses who are not beneficiaries (and not married to beneficiaries), and store the original safely. The PDF includes full signing instructions.

Can I update my Will after creating it?

Yes. You can reopen your Will file in WillWriter, make changes, and generate a new PDF. If you have already signed a previous version, you should destroy it and sign the new version with fresh witnesses to avoid confusion.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only for the initial download. WillWriter works entirely offline after installation. No internet connection is needed to create or generate your Will.
